Tacit acknowledgement of a clear conflict of interest from BBC

15 September, 2007

Sinn Féin West Belfast MLA Paul Maskey, responding to reports that the BBC Six counties Newsgathering Editor Mike Cairns has today resigned as RAF Public Relations Squadron Officer has said that this is "an interesting development and a tacit acknowledgement of a clear conflict of interest".

Mr Maskey said,

"Today's news of Mike Cairn's resignation is an interesting development and a tacit acknowledgement of a clear conflict of interests.

"Mike Cairn's two jobs were completely incompatible. The job of the BBC is to present the news in an impatial and fair way and as public service provider. It has failed at both in the past, not just in the eyes of republicans.

"The news that Mike Cairns, as a high ranking BBC official, also has been a commanding officer in the Royal Auxiliary Air Forces Public Relations Squadron since 2004 had caused outrage within my constituency.

"Following an official complaint by Sinn Féin on the issue of "double-jobbing", this issue is also currently being investigated by the six county BBC controller." Críoch
