DUP accused of ‘dishonest and bigoted’ agenda

18 September, 2007

Sinn Féin Education spokesperson Paul Butler MLA has rounded on DUP MLAs, including Iris Robinson, after an education debate in the Assembly today and accused them of pursuing a narrow, dishonest and bigoted agenda that marginalises the needs of children.

Mr Butler said:

"It is regrettable that the DUP approach to important education issues is clouded by a narrow, dishonest and bigoted agenda that unfortunately marginalises the needs of children.

"The dishonesty of the debate and willingness to distort the truth is a great disservice to the many many people who need their politicians to engage in a real debate about the future education of our children.

"The bigotry and particularly the relentless anti-Irish and anti-Catholic nature of many of the comments of their politicians demonstrates a singular absence of leadership.

"This petty politicking on such important issues only serves to create division at a time when should be putting the interests of all our children first." ENDS
