Causeway World heritage Status 'on the line'

20 September, 2007

North Antrim Sinn Féin MLA Daithí McKay has said that he is deeply concerned that the World Heritage Status of the Giant's Causeway is 'on the line'.

Mr McKay was speaking after questioning the Minister Arlene Foster at the Environment Committee this morning.

Mr McKay said:

"Going into this meeting this morning I was deeply concerned that the DOE had not taken the issue of the World Heritage Status of the Giant's Causeway into full consideration.

"Now that the Minister has said that she has not been in direct contact with UNESCO, the body responsible for conferring World Heritage Status, to date and that her department has not had any meaningful engagement with them I believe that she was clearly wrong to say that she was 'of a mind' to approve the private application for a Visitors Centre.

"There is no doubt about it. If Arlene Foster continues to approach this issue as she has done to date there is a strong possibility that the World Heritage Status of the Giant's Causeway will be lost." ENDS
