Rural link health initiative can provide vital access to older people

20 September, 2007

Sinn Féin West Tyrone MLA Barry McElduff has welcomed an initiative by rural link to provide a dedicated transport service to healthcare appointments in Carrickmore.

The service provides citizens from the Carrickmore / Creggan area with a low cost service to health appointments in both Carrickmore health centre and the Tyrone County Hospital in Omagh. The service will pick users up at their houses and return them home following their appointments. Essential amenities such as the post office, the local chemist or shops can also be visited.

Mr McElduff said

"I want to commend the rural link community transport and the GPs in Carrickmore health centre for this initiative. It provides an essential and important service to the community.

"I would like to urge people in the area to use the service; it is an important service and one which should be utilised. The service is very cheap and convenient and is an excellent way of gained access to healthcare for members of the local community.

"As I understand it this is a pilot scheme operating in the Carrickmore area only. I would like to see the scheme becoming permanent in the area and would also like to see such a service rolled out throughout county Tyrone. It is an excellent service and one which everyone should avail off." ENDS
