‘Grannying’ phenomenon underlines need for real progress breaking down border

21 September, 2007

Sinn Féin Foyle MLA Martina Anderson has said the current 'grannying' case in Derry underlines the need for real progress in breaking down the obstacles to mobility across the border.

Ms Anderson said:

"This case exposes the nonsense of the border and the contradictions faced by people particularly living in border communities.

"Whether it is an issue about where people educate their children, how they access health care or even tax issues the fact is that we need much more rapid progress in breaking down the obstacles to mobility across the border.

"The border has had a hugely negative impact on people's lives for generations. It has distorted economic development and divided communities. Given the new political dispensation we need to address the practical issues and we need real progress breaking down border." ENDS
