Classsroom Assistants deserve proper recognition

21 September, 2007

Sinn Féin Education Spokesperson, Lagan Valley MLA Paul Butler commenting on the ongoing dispute to pay and conditions for classroom assistants has called on all sides refocus on negotiations and re-iterated Sinn Fein demand for the full and proper recognition of the vital role of classroom assistants.

Mr Butler said:

"This dispute has been going on for far too long. We need to see employers, the Education Library Boards, and the unions representing the classroom assistants re-focus of the objective of delivering for the full and proper recognition of the vital role of classroom assistants.

"Classroom assistants play an important role in our schools. Yet, many feel that unless there is a change in their status that they in schools will continue to be undervalued in what is an often demanding and responsible job.

"It is essential that their jobs are graded and remunerated correctly.
"The issue of job evaluation for classroom assistants is a long running dispute. It has been running for 12 years. The results have been felt not just by classroom assistants but also in the classroom. It has damaged morale among classroom assistants and clearly not been good for our children. It time that those at the heart of the dispute resolved it.

"Sinn Féin has given its full support to the classroom assistants in their campaign for better pay and conditions." ENDS
