French proposals to use EU Agriculture funds to bail out the GALILEO project criticised
Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre de Brún has strongly criticised French proposals to use EU Agriculture funds to bail out the GALILEO project
Ms de Brún said:
"At a time when there is a sharp decrease in the number of working farms and when the rural development budget is considerably below what would be needed to produce sustainable rural communities, there should be no question of raiding the coffers of the EU Agriculture funds to pay for a failed Public Private Partnership arrangement.
"Farmers are constantly being told that they cannot expect to be bailed out when times are tough for farms and farm families. They should not now be further penalised because the attempt to produce a European GPS system through the GALILEO project has run into the sand.
"As we move towards the health check in 2008, farmers will want to see some indication that EU decision makers understand the value that they bring to society." ENDS
