McCrea accused of misrepresenting views of the Agriculture Committee

26 September, 2007

Sinn Féin Agriculture spokesperson, Gerry McHugh MLA has accused the chair of the Assembly Agriculture and Rural Development Committee, Willie McCrea of misrepresenting the views of the committee.

Mr McHugh said:

"It is very disappointing to hear the chair of the committee willfully misrepresenting the views of that committee because while we agreed to ask the Minister to come and speak with us at no time was there any agreement that we would indulge in a 'demand' for the Minster's presence.

"The committee chair asked the Minister to meet with us late on Monday night. It is reasonable that given such short notice for a Tuesday meeting that the Minister was unavailable, particularly as she was attending the National Ploughing Championships in County Offaly where she was out selling our local industry on the national stage.

"What concerns me most is the potential for the actions of Willie McCrea to undermine the positive working relationship that has been developed between the Minster and the committee." ENDS
