Death threats against Sinn Féin activists 'sinister'

27 September, 2007

Sinn Féin West Belfast MLA Paul Maskey, responding to reports that bullets have been sent to UTV studios with the names and details of six people including the party's senior press officer Richard McAuley, has said that this is a sinister development and not in isolation.

Mr Maskey said,

"Following the attack on my colleague Michelle Gildernew's office in Lisnaskea last week, this news is sinister, disturbing and not in isolation.

"This threat sent to UTV, which included bullets, claims to be from the Red Hand Commandos. It also names Sinn Féin officials including Richard McAuley and a journalist, Robin Livingstone.

"I urge Unionist politicians to show mature leadership, condemn these threats and use whatever influence they have to stop these actions.

"The PSNI also has an obligation to inform those named of the nature of the threat and to act forthwith.

"Sinn Féin will not be deterred in delivering real change for all the people of Ireland." ENDS
