Ó Caoláin sends Message of Support and Solidarity to Ennis Hospital Campaigners

28 September, 2007

Sinn Féin Dáil leader and Health spokesperson Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin has sent a message of solidarity to the Ennis General Hospital Development Committee on the eve of tomorrow's rally in support of EnnisHospital.

Deputy Ó Caoláin said the Government and HSE decision to axe the 24-hour Accident and Emergency service at Ennis would cost lives in the same way the ending of A&E at Monaghan GeneralHospital had cost lives. He said the Government "must be forced to take heed of the voice of the people in support of their hospitals".

Deputy Ó Caoláin added:

"Tomorrow the people of CountyClare will make their voices heard in huge numbers. They will force the Government to listen and take heed.

"The Government remained silent in the Dáil this week when I sought an emergency debate on the cuts now being imposed by the HSE and on the disastrous centralisation policy, including the latest blow to be struck which is the threatened closure of 24-hour Accident and Emergency at Ennis.

“This disastrous policy has deprived communities of vital hospital facilities and in Monaghan and elsewhere it has cost lives. This policy is not sustainable. It can and will be resisted and I commend the community in CountyClare in their stand.

"It is time we built a nationwide movement for equality of access to hospital care for all of our people." CRÍOCH
