Sinn Féin support for ‘Count Us In’ Disability Democracy project
Newry Armagh MLA Micky Brady has said that Sinn Féin fully support the 'Count Us In' project and that it is essential that we develop the platform to ensure that more disabled people to get involved in all areas of political life.
Speaking after participating in a Newry workshop facilitated by the "Count Us In" Disability Action project aimed at increasing the participation of disabled people in the democratic process Mr Brady said:
"Every person living with disability had the right to have their whole person recognised, their capabilities valued and developed to full potential, and their dignity respected.
"The Discussion was very informative. There is a view that people with disabilities do not have a significant and cohesive voice and this project which amongst other things will enhance the skills and confidence of disabled people in playing a more active role in the electoral and decision making process, will hopefully ensure that the platform that people living with disabilities need to highlight and address issues will become a reality.
"The project has been working locally with groups of people with learning disabilities and this initial meeting ensured that I heard at first hand some of the issues facing them. Their voice has to be heard and this is an appropriate platform". Mickey concluded by stating that he would encourage more disabled people to get involved in all areas of political life."
