Sinn Féin disappointed that Classroom Assistant’s dispute not resolved

1 October, 2007

Sinn Féin Education Spokesperson, Lagan Valley MLA Paul Butler said he is disappointed that the classroom assistant's dispute has not been resolved.

Sinn Féin has fully supported the classroom assistants and hopefully a way can be found to settle this long running dispute.

Mr Butler said:

"Across the north Sinn Féin representatives have been supporting classroom assistants.

"I very much welcomed the intervention of the Education Minister Caitriona Ruane in trying to get a resolution to this issue.

"The issue of job evaluation for classroom assistants is a long running dispute. It has been running for 12 years. The results have been felt not just by classroom assistants but also in the classroom.

"Both the unions and the management need to get back to the negotiation table and resolve this dispute.

"I hope that all involved stay at the table until the dispute is settled. Sinn Féin will continue to give its support to the classroom assistants in their campaign for better pay and conditions.

"We intend meeting all the unions who represent the classroom assistants." ENDS
