Ethnic communities urged to register to vote - Sinn Féin

2 October, 2007

Sinn Féin Ethnic Minorities Spokesperson Gerry McHugh has today urged all ethnic communities to use their democratic right and register to vote.

Speaking during this week's "registration week" from the Electoral Commission, Mr Mc Hugh said,

"Thousands of new citizens have chosen Ireland as their home to work, share cultures and build their lives. It is their democratic right to take part in the electoral process in this part of Ireland.

"All ethnic minorities should be empowered and afforded the right to vote and all efforts should be made to accomodate this right.

"To check if you are eligible to register you can contact the Electoral Office on 0800 4320 712.

"The registration form is available in a range of languages, including Irish, on the Registration page of the Electoral Office website at www.eoni.org.uk." ENDS
