1Million4Disability Campaign passes 1 million signatures

2 October, 2007

Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre de Brún has welcomed the news that the 1Million4Disability Campaign has passed its target of collecting 1 million signatures as part of the campaign to get the EU to introduce effective legislation to combat all forms of discrimination and guarantee full inclusion of the more than 50 million people in the EU who live with disabilities.

Ms de Brún said:

"It is great news that the 1Million4Disability Campaign has passed its target of collecting 1 million signatures as part of the campaign to get the EU to introduce effective legislation to combat all forms of discrimination and guarantee full inclusion for the 50 million people in the EU who live with disabilities.

"Two weeks, when Sinn Féin offered our full support to the campaign and organised signature collection drives right across the country, the Irish contribution to this target was 4,000 signatures short.

"Throughout the campaign it was great to see that so many people want to play a role in demanding stronger legislation to protect and promote the rights of people with disabilities. The 1 million signatures collected by the campaign sends a huge message to the European Parliament that must not be ignored. I would like to congratulate all those involved in this hugely successful and important campaign." ENDS
