Donegal's 18% unemployment must be addressed - Doherty

3 October, 2007

Speaking in the Seanad today Sinn Féin Seanadóir Pearse Doherty has called for the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment to address the house on the issue of high unemployment in the Donegal region.

The Donegal Senator said:

“Recent job losses in Gweedore are evidence of an ongoing employment crisis in Donegal.

“With unemployment at 18% government must stop treating the county as an afterthought.

“Government interdepartmental talking shops are not delivering jobs. Ministers need to stop talking and start delivering.

“It is truly frustrating to listen to Fianna Fáil representatives defend their party’s successive inability to deliver for the people of Donegal.

“How will businesses be attracted to Donegal when there is scant infrastructure? For example there are no rail links and patchy broadband coverage.

“Donegal and the North-West region need to be transformed into an attractive area of economic development.

“The neglect of Donegal is a testimony to the collective failure of successive Fianna Fáil led governments to prioritise this region of the country.

“Sinn Féin will continue to fight for jobs, infrastructure and social provisions and the necessary economic investment to deliver these most basic of wants and needs for communities in the North-West.” CRíOCH
