Ó Caoláin calls for Dáil debate on Health funding
Sinn Féin Dáil leader and spokesperson on Health and Children Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin has called for a Dáil debate on the funding of the health system and the need for multi-annual budgeting in light of current cuts affecting patient care.
Deputy Ó Caoláin said, “The Tánaiste and Minister for Finance Brian Cowen announced on 13th September a new format for the Budget. He said that instead of Estimates we will have a Pre-Budget Outlook which will set out the economic and fiscal outlook for the next three years. This was promised for October.
“There should be a comprehensive Dáil debate on the Pre-Budget Outlook. Most importantly, this debate must address the need for multi-annual budgeting in our health services as it is widely acknowledged that the current system of annual budgeting contributes to the type of situation we have now in the health services with cuts being ordered at the end of the year and patients being adversely affected.” ENDS
