de Brún welcomes presentation of 1 million signatures for disability rights
Over 1,000 people with disabilities are gathering today outside the European Commission building in Brussels to present the 1 million signatures which were collected from all over Europe for disability rights. Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso will receive the petition.
Speaking from Brussels where she attended the presentation Ms de Brún said:
"I am delighted to see so many people here representing the 1million plus across Europe who are demanding greater rights for the disabled. Last week, I along with Sinn Féin activists across Ireland, was on the streets asking people to sign the petition as part of the last push to reach the target of one million signatures. I was delighted at the wholehearted response we received from the public."
"Today's events mark the culmination of this excellent campaign which has shown how citizens across Europe can work together to influence decision-makers. I applaud all those who took part in this campaign and wish them all the best and pledge Sinn Féin's continuing support for the rights of people with a disability." ENDS
