Economy 7 price increase will hit the most vulnerable
Sinn Féin anti-poverty spokesperson, West Tyrone MLA Claire McGill has said the latest in increase in electricity prices will place an extra burden on many consumers as they enter the winter months and will add to the rising fuel poverty that affects many homes across the North.
Ms McGill was particularly concerned about the planned 14 percent increase in Economy 7 night time prices.
Ms McGill said:
"This latest increase in electricity prices is also coming at a time of year when we normally see an increase in the price of home heating oil that coupled together will place a heavy burden on many families weekly budget. This will also undoubtedly add to the ever growing problem of fuel poverty in the North.
"Just this morning I received a call from an elderly constituent worried about the planned 14 percent increase in Economy 7 night time prices. The constituent was very worried that they would be unable to heat their home this winter, which is an intolerable situation to have in 2007.
"The Economy 7 price increase will affect thousands of households right across the North. There needs to be the necessary steps put in place to help replace Economy 7 with a cheaper and more efficient system and that needs to happen now as a matter of urgency.
"Being able to heat your home should not be a luxury." ENDS
