McDonald calls on Greens to engage in honest debate on Reform Treaty

8 October, 2007

Sinn Fein National Chairperson Mary Lou McDonald has called on Green Party John Gormley not to buy into anti EU rhetoric during the forthcoming EU Reform Treaty debate.

The Dublin MEP said today:

“Whilst Sinn Féin respects the internal democratic decision making of all political party’s I am concerned with Minister Gormley’s proposition that to support the treaty is a pro Europe position which indicates that to be against it is anti European.

“It would be greatly disappointing if the Greens who like my own party have critically engaged with the European Union were now to adopt a ‘you’re either with us or against us’ approach to the debate now that they are in government with Fianna Fáil.

“The Reform Treaty should it be ratified has long term and far reaching implications for EU member states. An honest and democratic debate on its contents is the very least the Irish people should expect from their elected representatives.

“Whatever position the Green Party decides to take in the referendum is a matter for them but Minister Gormley and his colleagues have a responsibility to the people of Ireland to present a balanced and informative position.” CRÍOCH
