Gildernew -Low Income Report highlights failure to tackle poverty

30 September, 2003

Sinn Féin Fermanagh South Tyrone MP Michelle Gildernew commenting on the publication of the report into 'Low Income Households' has said that we need to tackle objective need and take urgent steps to target poverty across the board.

Ms Gildernew said:

"These figures make very depressing reading. This report highlights the failure to tackle poverty. People on low income, lone parents and the sick and disabled, and children all face a greater risk of poverty.

"There is no coherent and effective anti-poverty strategy in place. We need to target need on objective basis and target resources that are commensurate with the levels of need.

"Wherever poverty exists we must challenge it. The eradication of poverty should be our collective goal.

"The reality is that there are increased risks faced within all sections of our society, significantly as we see the traditional jobs from the manufacturing sector being lost there are increasing risks of low income within specific Unionist communities. However it is also disappointing that the nationalist community still face a greater risk of low income in absolute terms. What Sinn Féin want to see is everyone lifted out of the poverty trap.

"We need an anti-poverty strategy that works and we need it now. We need targeted action and committed resources that will eradicate poverty."ENDS
