Proposal for Defence Forces to tackle crime ridiculous – Ó Snodaigh

9 October, 2007

Sinn Féin Justice Spokesperson has described as ridiculous a proposal from Fine Gael TD Charlie Flanagan to use the Defence Forces in the fight against crime. Deputy Ó Snodaigh said Justice Minister Brian Lenihan was wrong to have considered the proposal in the Dáil today.

Speaking today Deputy Ó Snodaigh said, "While I agree that there must be a prioritisation of tackling serious drug and gun crime this must be done by the Gardaí. There are currently approximately 4,000 Gardaí who are fully trained in crime fighting working in jobs that could just as easily be done by civilians. These Gardaí must be freed up and re-deployed into the fight against crime.

"The proposal from Fine Gael for the Defence Forces to be used in the fight against crime is ridiculous in the extreme. What training or experience do the Defence Forces have in fighting serious crime? They are trained for a completely different role.

"Justice Minister Brian Lenihan was wrong to consider this proposal and should have ruled it out of hand when it was raised in the Dáil today." ENDS
