Sinn Féin Senator Doherty welcomes Seanad Debate on Donegal

11 October, 2007

Speaking today Sinn Féin Seanadóir Pearse Doherty has welcomed the announcement that there will be Statements heard in the Seanad next Thursday (October 18th) regarding the Role of the Government in promoting Ireland as an attractive location for foreign investment.

The Donegal Seanadóir said:

“Last week I called for such a debate to address the issue of high unemployment in the Donegal region which currently stands at 18%. This is in stark contrast to the country’s overall unemployment rate of 4.5% up to the second quarter of 2007.

“Government must stop treating Donegal as an afterthought. How will business and foreign investment be attracted to such a region where there is scant infrastructure and little social and economic investment?

“If Donegal and the North-West region is to be sustained it must be transformed into an attractive area of economic development. Government must commit to substantial investment and planning to make this region a viable area for economic activity.” Críoch
