HSE cutbacks hitting North East worst – Ó Caoláin

11 October, 2007

Sinn Féin Health Spokesperson Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD has described as scandalous news that the entire Orthopaedic Department at Our Lady's Hospital Navan will have to close for the month of December due to HSE cut backs.

Speaking as news of the closure broke this evening Deputy Ó Caoláin said, "The closure of the Orthopaedic Department at Our Lady's Hospital Navan is yet another blow to the health services in the North East.

"This, coupled with the fact that up to eight operations per day are being cancelled at Cavan General Hospital, shows that once again it is the North East region that suffers most from HSE incompetence.

"This evening's scandalous news is a direct result of the financial restrictions imposed by the HSE on hospitals and again exposes the myth that the recruitment freeze will not affect patient care.

"In the interest of patient care Minister Harney must instruct the HSE to lift its ban on recruitment immediately." ENDS
