Anderson demands help for homeless

14 October, 2007

Action is needed to tackle the issue of homelessness on Derry's streets, Foyle Sinn Féin MLA Martina Anderson has insisted.

Ms Anderson said:

"It has been brought to Sinn Féin's attention that up to 20 people have been sleeping rough in sites near the city centre over recent days.

"I went to visit some of these sites at the weekend and it is clear that people have indeed been living there.

"It is intolerable that anyone should be forced to sleep rough in this day and age and I will be doing everything in my power to ensure that these people get the help they need.

"Sinn Féin has already tabled a motion in the Assembly demanding action around the homeless situation in Derry and I now intend to follow that up by raising this matter with all the relevant departments and agencies to ensure we get a satisfactory response." ENDS
