Gildernew slams Greens

15 October, 2007

Sinn Fein Fermanagh South Tyrone MP Michelle Gildernew MLA, who is also the Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development, has said that now the Green party are in government with Fianna Fáil that their green credentials are fast disappearing.

Ms Gildernew said:

"Ever since the Green party climbed into bed with Fianna Fáil the sad reality is that they have abandoned any pretence at being interested in the environment or caring for our rural communities.

"We have Minister Eamonn Ryan saying before he went into government that the Greens would intervene on the Corrib issue - now he says nothing and now we have a Green Environment Minister in John Gormley advocating the need for two incinerators in Ireland.

"My priority is to defend our farmers and help to build a sustainable future. I have worked with our farmers and listened. This is why I have engaged with not just the so-called 'big 4' but with all of the major multiple retailers. It may be difficult for John Barry to understand but the fact is that unless there is a real engagement with the supermarkets then we are unlikely to see a better price for our farmers." ENDS
