15 October, 2007

Sinn Féin Foyle MLA Raymond McCartney has welcomed the news that the long running postal dispute may be coming to an end after Royal Mail and the Union of Communications Worker Union (CWU) agreed terms covering all the issues in the dispute which will be considered by the union's Executive (Monday 15th October).

Mr McCartney said:

"I am glad that there now seems to some movement in the long running postal dispute .Royal Mail and the Union of Communications Worker Union (CWU) have agreed terms covering all the issues in the dispute which will be considered by the union's Executive today.

"It's been clear for some time that there needed to be a resolution to this dispute over Royal Mail's modernisation plans, which the CWU feared would lead to 40,000 jobs loses ,changes to working conditions and pensions rights.

"Now that both sides have agreed terms hopefully a final settlement can be reached that will allay the fears of workers about jobs losses and changes to their working conditions and entitlements and Royal Mail can make plans to provide a vital modern postal service for public and business customers alike."
