O'Dowd expresses concern after Disabled Drivers issued with Parking Fines

15 October, 2007

Sinn Féin MLA John O'Dowd has expressed concern about disabled people being issued with parking fines for allegedly displaying their Blue Badges incorrectly.

Mr. O'Dowd said:

"Two incidents, reported to my office within a 24 hour period, of disabled persons being issued tickets because their blue badges were displayed the wrong way round highlights an over-zealous approach by NCP parking wardens. Parking Wardens have an important role to play but their authority has to be exercised with judgement and diplomacy.

"No guidance is given on the badge as to which side is front or back or as to which side has to be displayed. Therefore the fact that a badge is clearly displayed should be enough. It would have been clear to a man on a galloping horse that the drivers of these vehicles held disabled badges and to issue parking tickets is bordering on the ridiculous.

"I will be raising this issue with the minister at the Assembly and I would encourage any disabled people who have been fined for incorrectly displaying their badge to contact our office so that the incident can be recorded." ENDS
