Sinn Féin welcome clarification that no money was intended for UDA

16 October, 2007

Sinn Féin Assembly group leader John O'Dowd MLA has said welcomed the clarification from Margaret Ritchie that there will be no funding for the UDA.

Mr O'Dowd said:

"When the NIO first announced this funding Sinn Fein expressed deep concern. We told the British government then that it was the wrong thing to do. That resources should only be allocated on the basis of objective need.

"I was surprised to hear Margaret Ritchie say that she had been considering giving money to the UDA and would be prepared to return to this in certain circumstances. However I now welcome further assurances that there will be no money for the UDA.

"There should be no money for the UDA regardless of any progress on the broader issues." ENDS
