Elevation of Archbishop Sean Brady

17 October, 2007

Sinn Féin deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness, MP MLA has warmly the announcement that Archbishop Sean Brady is to be made a Cardinal.

Mr McGunniess said:

"I am delighted by the news of the elevation of Dr Brady.

"In his 40 plus years as a priest and over a decade as the archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland he has won himself a reputation as a man of the people who has worked tirelessly to reach out to other communities and churches.

"His background as an educator and a pastor both in his native Co.Cavan and in Rome, where he spent many years, have served him well in his time as leader of the Catholic Church in Ireland.

"His support for the peace process has been invaluable and he has contributed in no small way to the creation of the positive political era which we are presently enjoying.

"On a personal level I have always found him to be a man of great intellect and integrity but most of all someone who, despite the elevated office which he holds, has always displayed a humility which have greatly endeared him to not only his own congregation but to all sections of our community."
