Royal Mail need to provide the extra resources to clear the backlog of mail

17 October, 2007

Sinn Féin MLA Raymond McCartney has called on Royal Mail to put in what ever extra resources that are needed to clear the backlog of mail that has accumulated in recent weeks during industrial action.

Mr McCartney said

"I am calling on Royal Mail to ensure that the huge backlog of mail caused by the recent industrial action is delivered as quickly as possible. We cannot have a situation were it is going to take three or four weeks for this backlog to be cleared.

"This is a crucial time for many small businesses across the North who relay on the postal system for the delivery of stock and supplies for the Christmas market .We must also remember the thousands of people who may be waiting on important items of mail, cheques and bills that may incur charges for late payment. The backlog could also cause patients to miss important hospital and dentist appointments, any hold up in receiving a letter could mean a delay to the start of their treatment.

"Royal Mail needs to put in any additional working hours that are needed at sorting offices across the North to help clear the mail backlog. Normally around the month of November Royal Mail would start recruiting casual staff for the Christmas post, they need to bring forward those plans and start the additional staff now to help with the current situation."
