Sinn Féin call for Ombudsman investigation into role of PSNI ‘agent provocateur’
Sinn Féin North Antrim MLA Daithí McKay has called for a Police Ombudsman Office investigation into the activities of a PSNI 'agent provocateur' particularly in the Ballymena area.
Mr McKay said:
"Now that there are reports that a man, who was very active in the Ballymena area as a destabilising anti-Sinn Fein force, was working as a paid PSNI there is an urgent need for the Ombudsman to investigate.
"Paddy Murray was behind a great deal of anti-Sinn Fein activity and was responsible for increasing tensions particularly in the Ballymena area. He appears to have been able to act with impunity despite being charged with a number of very serious offences in 2005.
"If, as is now being claimed, he was working as a paid agent then there are a number of very serious questions that must be answered.
"Sinn Fein will be seeking an urgent meeting with the Ombudsman's office and we will be asked for a full investigation into the activities of this PSNI 'agent provocateur'.
"Despite the political progress of recent months this is evidence of the malign influence within our communities that does nothing except manipulate and ratchet up tensions. We are determined to end partisan and political policing within our communities." ENDS
