‘Letterkenny not Belfast’ - Anderson

19 October, 2007

Foyle Sinn Féin MLA Martina Anderson has called for greater North-South co-operation in further and higher education.

Ms. Anderson said: "I intend to make table a question in the Assembly on Monday calling for stronger links in higher education on a north-south basis.

"This issue is particularly relevant to Derry because of the scandalous way apprentice training services have been taken out of the city and largely centralised in the greater Belfast area.

"That is an issue in itself and one that we in Sinn Féin will also be raising on the Assembly floor in the coming days and weeks.

"In the meantime, however, I feel that moves should be made to increase co-operation between educational institutions in Derry and Donegal and, indeed, across all border areas.

"After all, it makes much more sense for a young person from Derry who wants to learn a trade to travel to Letterkenny rather than Belfast." ENDS
