Sinn Féin Councillors warned of threat to lives

22 October, 2007

Five Sinn Féin Councillors, including Glengormely Councillor Briege Meehan and four North Belfast Councillors were visited by the PSNI last night, Sunday 22nd October and informed that they had information that their lives is under threat from a Dissident source.

Sinn Féin Policing Spokesperson Alex Maskey MLA said:

"A number of Sinn Fein councillors were visited last night by the PSNI and informed that their lives were under threat from a dissident source. It is totally unacceptable that anyone purporting to be republican should threaten other republicans who have a different perspective on the way forward.

"It is equally unacceptable that the PSNI can visit the home of an elected representative with this type of information and then refuse to provide detail of the alleged threat in order that its veracity and the precautions required can be assessed.

"If such a threat does exist I can assure everyone that it will not deter any Sinn Féin elected representative from continuing to work for the people they represent and the wider community. I would encourage those republicans referred to as dissidents to get behind the process and help to advance our republican objectives in a democratic and peaceful manner." ENDS
