Lenihan must back up CAB pledge with actions – Ó Snodaigh

23 October, 2007

Sinn Féin Justice Spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD has welcomed the pledge from Justice Minister Brian Lenihan that the Criminal Assets Bureau is to work more closely with Gardaí in order to target all levels of drug dealers. However Deputy Ó Snodaigh said Minister Lenihan must back up his pledge with actions.

Speaking today he said, "I welcome Minister Lenihan's announcement that the Criminal Assets Bureau will work more closely with the Gardaí in order to tackle all levels of drug dealers. Sinn Féin made this specific proposal in our submission to the Garda Policing Plan 2008. The Minister must now back up his pledge with actions.

"We recognise that to seriously tackle the drugs crisis we must not only target major drug dealers but middle and lower level dealers also. If law enforcers do not target drug dealers at all levels then the illegal drugs industry will always have people to replace major dealers when they get caught.

"Part of this strategy must see the Criminal Assets Bureau work closely with the Gardaí with a focus on eliminating the proceeds from drug related crime at all levels." ENDS
