Ó Snodaigh welcomes Coolock drugs seizure

25 October, 2007

Sinn Féin Justice Spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD has congratulated Gardaí on the seizure of €750,000 worth of heroin in Coolock last night. Deputy Ó Snodaigh said while all drug seizures are welcome they are a mere drop in the ocean when compared to the amount of drugs entering the state and repeated his call for a doubling of resources for Garda Drugs Squads.

He said, "The seizure of heroin worth €750,000 in Coolock is a welcome development. This heroin was destined for the streets and will not now pose a threat to society.

"However, while all drug seizures are welcome, they are a mere drop in the ocean when compared to the amount of drugs entering the country and hitting the streets.

"If we are to effectively tackle serious crime in Ireland, the rate of which is increasing at an astonishing pace as highlighted by yesterday's crime figures, then it is essential that the Government gets to grips with the drugs crisis. Every shipment of drugs now entering the country comes with a quantity of arms to protect the dealers' lucrative business and we have seen in recent weeks that these criminals have no hesitation in using these guns.

"Therefore, Sinn Féin has called for a doubling of the resources for Garda Drugs Units in our recent submission to the Garda Policing Plan 2008. Senior Gardaí reportedly acknowledge that drugs units are often diverted by Garda management to work on issues other than drugs. So not only must the resources be doubled but those resources already allocated must be allowed to focus properly on drugs." ENDS
