de Brún calls for advanced direct payments for livestock farmers
Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre de Brún has today supported calls in the European Parliament for advanced direct payments for livestock farmers as the price of food and feed continues to rise at an alarming rate. She has also joined fellow MEPs in calling on the Commission to investigate the effects of concentration in the retail sector and the power of the major wholesale companies and a small number of large retailers.
Speaking from Strasbourg Ms de Brún said:
"I am delighted to see MEPs raising this issue and calling for appropriate action. The European Commission as said that meat prices could rise by up to 30% next year because of the increased price of feed for animals. The consequences of such a rise cannot be ignored. The dominance of large retailers is hitting small local retailers hard and is also adding to the difficulties for farmers at home.
"I welcome today's intervention by MEPs and hope the Commission and governments are listening to what MEPs, and more importantly farmers and consumers are telling them - the rise in price in food and animal feed is a crisis and action is needed." Críoch
