Seagate expected to announce major job losses for Limavady - Brolly

28 October, 2007

Sinn Féin MLA for East Derry, Francie Brolly has expressed serious concern for the local economy if Seagate confirms rumours of major job losses or plant closure tomorrow.

Francie Brolly said:

"I have been contacted by a number of Seagate Employees who are fearful that the company intends to announce that the plant will be shut down within twelve months. If this is the case it will have serious ramifications for the local economy and I will be contacting the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Investment, Nigel Dodds to see what steps he can take to minimise the effects of such an eventuality.

"If this information is confirmed, I will be requesting the Minister to enter into discussions with the company immediately to ensure that employees affected by any redundancies are given every opportunity to avail of retraining and educational programmes to enable them to remain in the workforce. His department must also do all in its power to ensure a replacement for Seagate in Limavady is found.

"This is but the latest example of globalisation and competition from emerging economies for industries at the lower end of the wage spectrum. The remedy for this is for government, universities and commerce to combine their efforts to development and produce the workforce with the high level of skills and expertise that will attract the high powered jobs that are not susceptible to such market forces.

"I can assure the employees that I will do all that I can to assist them at this time to ensure that all of their rights are protected." ends
