All-Ireland co-operation on Older People Issues

29 October, 2007

Sinn Féin Newry and Armagh MLA Mickey Brady speaking ahead of attending the Positive Ageing cross-border Advocacy conference in The Hilgrove Hotel in Monaghan on Thursday has said that advocacy a key way to bring older people back into society.

This is the latest meeting in an ongoing series focusing on the needs of older people across all of the border counties that have also been attended by Sinn Féin's Dail Spokesman on older people Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD.

Mr. Brady said:

"Cross border co-operation is vital on all issues and is particularly relevant to older people. We have seen that with recent improvements on all-Ireland travel for older people and Conor Murphy's move just this week in giving all over 60's free travel in the 6 counties should also be welcomed and is something we can start to press for on an island-wide basis.

"Advocacy for older people is a key way to bring older people back into society, as we have seen from a recent Age Concern report that 73% of older people felt marginalised and that is an unacceptable situation.

"Sinn Féin as a party is committed to creating real positive change for all our people and that includes our senior citizens." ENDS
