SDLP and UUP living in political denial

29 October, 2007

Sinn Féin Assembly member John O'Dowd has accused the SDLP and UUP of living in an arrogant fantasy world of political denial. Mr O'Dowd's remarks come after recent whinging in the media from both parties about their status in the Executive.

Mr O'Dowd said:

"It seems that both the SDLP and UUP are living in an arrogant fantasy world of political denial. After so many years as the leading parties and having delivered very little, the people through successive elections have sent a clear message that they wanted the political landscape to change.

"Given the almost constant whinging from both the UUP and SDLP in recent times including their joint performance at the annual UUP conference at the weekend it would seem that the two parties seem oblivious to the fact that the people have decided to replace them as the lead parties. They seem to want to try and control the political agenda while at the same time failing to recognise that the political reality has changed significantly since the last Executive was in place.

"The fact is people voted for working political institutions. Sinn Féin and the DUP have delivered them. The constant wrangling and political stalemate which marked the Executive under the UUP and SDLP has been replaced by a working relationship which in the past week alone delivered a Budget, a Programme for Government and an Investment Strategy.

"This is politics being made to work. People would prefer the SDLP and UUP to swallow their pride and get on with the job of playing a constructive role in the delivering for our communities through the Executive rather than behaving like small children in a huff." ENDS
