Concern over police involvement in deportation cases- Maskey MLA

31 October, 2007

Sinn Féin MLA and Policing Board Member Alex Maskey has expressed grave concern over the deportation of East Belfast resident Aderonke Falode to a draconian and controversial detention centre; Dungavel in South Lanarkshire, Scotland and shall raise the issue of PSNI involvement in deportation cases with the Chief Constable.

Mr Maskey said,

"Aderonke Falode, originally from Nigeria has settled in Belfast with her three children and has played a positive role in the East Belfast community and is an active member of her local church.

"I shall do my utmost to reverse this decision at the 11th hour for this family.

"I shall also be raising this issue directly with the Chief Constable Hugh Orde regarding the way that the police are being used in an underhand way by being asked to arrest people at the behest of the Home Office, especially at weekends when access to solicitors can be limited.

"Sinn Féin is wholly committed to the rights for all our citizens and my party opposes the use of draconian detention centres."
