Stand up for Derry

31 October, 2007

Foyle Sinn Féin MLA Martina Anderson has announced a 'Stand Up For Derry' campaign initiative that will demand major new investment for the north west.

Ms Anderson said:

"For too long Derry has been overlooked when it comes to government investment. This campaign aims to change that. The decades of neglect which has blighted this region for decades must be challenged.

"Sinn Féin has been planning this campaign for some time and has already met with many of the key stakeholders and our message to them is simple - it's time to stand up for Derry.

"There are five central demands to this campaign. We want more quality jobs for Derry, more social and affordable housing plus greater investment in health, education and infrastructure.

"We are simply not prepared to let Derry be overlooked anymore. The people of this city deserve better and we intend to ensure that they get it.

"Through the Programme for Government, the Executive has committed itself to targeting resources where they are needed most.

"We aim to ensure that commitment is now delivered on.

"Over the coming weeks, Sinn Féin will be launching a number of initiatives as part of this campaign and I would urge everyone to support these because the time has come to instil a can do attitude in Derry and end the neglect. The time has come to stand up for Derry." ENDS
