Sectarian Knife Attack‏

2 November, 2007

Sinn Féin Derry City Councillor Lynn Fleming has said that she was horrified to find out that the young man attacked in John Street had to receive over 50 stitches to a wound in his back.

Councillor Fleming said,

"The cowards who carried out this attack have nothing to offer our society and we are fortunate today that we are not dealing with a fatality. Sectarianism must be faced down by getting both communities to stand up and confront those responsible.

"It is obvious that the gang that carried out this attack went prepared with a weapon or weapons intent on inflicting severe injury or death on some innocent person whether because of their different religion or as has been seen recently different sexual preference or race.

"These bigots must be caught before they have an opportunity to strike again and anyone with information should make it available so that these people are brought before a court.

"My thoughts are with this young man and his family and I hope that he makes a full and speedy recovery from this horrific assault." ENDS
