Threats target Belfast republicans

3 November, 2007

Sinn Féin North Belfast MLA Gerry Kelly has condemned the deaths threats issued by dissident republicans against 10 people in North Belfast including a number of republicans.

Mr Kelly said:

"In recent days and weeks there have been a number of reported threats targeting Sinn Féin councillors in North Belfast including the most recent bomb hoax targeting Glengormley councillor Briege Meehan today.

"These latest threats reportedly coming from the same dissident source target ten people from across north Belfast including a number of republicans.

"I have to say those behind these threats need to reflect long and hard on their position.

"They have taken their place in a long line of people including the British State and their surrogate loyalist gangs in threatening and targeting republicans and nationalists. These threats and campaigns of violence against our party failed in the past to stop us representing the people who elect us and they will continue to fail in the future." ENDS
