Sinn Féin comment on new Assembly pro-life working group

2 November, 2007

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Women's Issues Jennifer McCann MLA has re-iterated the party's position on abortion.

Ms McCann said:

"Sinn Fein is opposed to abortion and is also opposed to the extension of the 1967 Abortion Act to the north of Ireland.

"We are not opposed to the formation of the Pro-Life group at the Assembly today.

"We recently voted in the Assembly in support of a motion opposing any attempt to make abortion more widely available and we accept that health professionals working in this field need clear guidelines.

"Furthermore we believe the issue would be better dealt with in the Assembly, particularly the Assembly Health Committee.

"I believe the best way to deal with this is to put in place the support services that are needed through comprehensive sex education, full access to childcare and financial support for single parents." ENDS
