O'Dowd welcomes Minister's response to Disabled 'Blue Badge' issue

5 November, 2007

Upper Bann Sinn Féin Assembly member John O'Dowd has welcomed the response from Regional Development Minister Conor Murphy to an Assembly question he tabled after a number of disabled people in the Banbridge and Lurgan areas of Upper Bann were issued with parking fines for allegedly displaying their 'Blue Badge' the wrong way round.

Mr. O'Dowd commented:

"I welcome the announcement by the Minister that his department are preparing a consultation document in respect of a number of changes to the Blue Badge scheme. The proposed changes include the alteration of the design of the badge, and the inclusion of clearer instructions about which side of the Badge must be displayed.

Mr. O'Dowd concluded:

"I feel the actions of the NCP traffic wardens in issuing fines to disabled people over the way their badge is displayed to be very over the top to say the least. However, I welcome the response of the Minister to this issue, in particular his commitment to consult widely and consider any suggestions about the actual design of the badge." ENDS
