Ó Caoláin welcomes Taoiseach’s comments on Northern representation

7 November, 2007

Sinn Féin Dáil Leader Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin has welcomed the Taoiseach's comments in the Dáil today when he stated his support for representation in the Dáil for Six County MPs. However, Deputy Ó Caoláin said the Taoiseach should push ahead with his own proposal to facilitate Northern MPs in a Committee of the whole Dáil.

Deputy Ó Caoláin said today, "During an exchange with myself this morning in the Dáil, the Taoiseach stated his continued support for the recommendations of the All Party Committee on the Constitution regarding Northern representation in the Dáil. The Taoiseach went on to say that he would implement the recommendations tomorrow if he could get all party agreement.

"What the Taoiseach seems to forget is that the Committee that made the recommendations was an All Party committee. He should not now accept any protestations from either Fine Gael or The Labour Party.

"I would urge the Taoiseach to push ahead with the implementation of his own proposal, in line with committee recommendations, for Six County MPs to be given access to the Dáil sitting in committee of the whole Dáil." ENDS
