Comments from DUP MLA have potential to put lives in danger - Butler

7 November, 2007

Responding to comments made in the assembly yesterday by DUP MLA Michelle Mc Ilveen during a teaching jobs debate, Sinn Féin MLA Paul Butler has said that her comments have the potential to put lives in danger.

He said,

"The reference made to Irish Medium schools and former IRA prisoners was dangerous.

"I listened carefully to Michelle Mc Ilveen's comments, and I am seriously concerned about her remarks.

"She may have actually placed the lives of people in danger.

"This is not the first time she has done this. During a debate on the Bill of Rights forum she used similar ill-advised language against people working in the human rights sector.

"Her comments are also similar to the 1980's in Westminister and Douglas Hogg's nonsense regarding Belfast solicitor Pat Finucane.

"I ask Ms Mc Ilveen to be more sensitive and think before she speaks in the future." Deireadh
