Fight against crime must be escalated after Ballyfermot shooting
Speaking to more than 100 Dublin Sinn Féin activists at a conference this morning Dublin South Central TD and party Justice Spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh announced details of a campaign to create safer communities and commended Gardaí for apprehending two men after a shooting in his own constituency last night.
Deputy Ó Snodaigh said, “Many communities throughout Dublin are living in fear as anti-social behaviour and gangland violence continues to escalate. I want to commend the officers who apprehended two men in my constituency last night despite being threatened with a sawn off shotgun. The fact that these criminals confronted the Gardaí shows that they have no fear of the law or of its officers. That is why Sinn Féin has called for an escalation of the fight against crime.
“Today Dublin Sinn Féin is launching its campaign to create safer communities. The campaign aims to put pressure on the Minister for Justice to free up Gardaí from administrative duties to be re-deployed into the fight against crime. We are seeking more community Gradaí working in genuine partnership with the community and we want to see more Gardaí patrolling communities on foot and bicycles rather than in cars and vans.
“In the coming days we will begin dropping 200,000 leaflets to communities throughout Dublin while we have printed 50,000 post-cards making demands of the Government. We will also initiate a door to door survey of more than 10,000 homes to highlight scale of the problem and we will publish the results of that survey early in the new year.
“Sinn Féin believes everybody has the right to feel safe in their homes and communities. This campaign aims to ensure that they do.” ENDS
