Anderson and McCartney to attend London Conference on Venezuela
Sinn Féin Foyle MLAs Martina Anderson and Raymond McCartney will attend a conference in London this weekend on the current situation Venezuela.
The conference has been organised by the Venezuela Information Centre (from Britain), Le Monde Diplomatic (from France) and Labour Friends of Venezuela (Britain), with the sponsorship and support of the Venezuelan government Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Speaking before the event Ms Anderson said:
"The aim of the conference is to build support of democracy and social progress in Venezuela across Europe, and will include a high-level delegation of representatives from the Venezuelan government and civil society. Our attendance will give us an opportunity to link up and have more dialogue and get more information directly on what is happening in Venezuela.
"We also be also to discuss in what practical way as politicians in Ireland we can aid that process. The event will be opened by Ken Livingstone, Mayor of London, who has recently signed the first economic co-operation agreement between a European capital city and the government of Venezuela."
Speaking before the event Mr McCartney said:
"We hope to hear about the positive developments in Venezuela and help develop an understanding of those developments. There is a need to strengthen relations between different sectors of European society and their counterparts in Venezuela; and to work towards ensuring that Europe develops positive relations with the government and institutions of Venezuela.
"There will also be specific workshops for elected representatives, trade unionists, academics and others, which will provide an opportunity for detailed discussion on the situation regarding Venezuela within all sectors." ENDS
