Sinn Féin call for all-Ireland Road Safety Conference

12 November, 2007

Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Road Safety, Newry Armagh MLA Cathal Boylan has called for an all-Ireland conference on Road Safety.

Speaking ahead of an Assembly debate on the issue Mr Boylan said:

"The carnage on our roads is a national disgrace. Each year hundreds of people are killed and injured.

"There is a particular concentration of road accidents in the border areas.

"There is already a deepening relationship on this issue north and south but we cannot be complacent.

"We need to do much more. We need to recognise that road deaths are avoidable. We need to recognise that speed is a key defining feature of road traffic accidents.

"Sinn Fein believe that not only do we to work together on this island to tackle this crisis but that we need to work towards integration of the Road Safety Council and the Road Safety Authority, to deal with the issue of road safety on an all-Ireland basis.

"No-one should be afraid of this approach. We need to put aside any narrow partisan opposition to an all-Ireland approach to the deaths on our roads and put the safety of our citizens first." ENDS
